Celebrating Progress: Promotion Ceremonies

At Ravensguard BJJ, we believe in recognizing and celebrating the hard work, dedication, and progress of our students on their Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey. One of the most significant ways we do this is through our regular promotion ceremonies. These aren't just about getting a new belt color; they're a vital part of fostering community spirit and providing a tangible measure of achievement.

What Happens at a BJJ Promotion Ceremony?

The format of our youth program and adult program ceremonies, follow a similar format:

  • Students, family, and friends gather at the gym. There's often a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation in the air.

  • Students line up on the mat and those who have earned a promotion are called up individually.

  • The coach who has been primarily instructing the student will often say a few words about their journey, highlighting their improvements, dedication, and contributions to the academy.

  • Students may earn a stripe on their current belt or a belt promotion. The new belt is tied around the student's waist by Professor John George.

  • After the formal presentations, we gather for photos, socializing, and celebrating together. This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to connect and share in the excitement.

  • Did we mention the Gauntlet? Don’t worry, it’s totally optional! As a tradition of camaraderie and acknowledgment, students who have received a belt promotion will walk through a line of their training partners who "congratulate" them with light taps on their newly adorned belt. This signifies the support of the entire team.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt System

The belt system in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a visual representation of a student's journey and progress and follows this progression:

  • Youth Belts (in order): White, Grey (with white, then grey, then black stripe), Yellow (with white, then yellow, then black stripe), Orange (with white, then orange, then black stripe), Green (with white, then green, then black stripe).

  • Adult Belts (in order): White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black, and then various degrees of red and black, red and white, and red belts at the highest levels.
