Starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu After 35
At Ravensguard BJJ in Wilmington, many of our adult members started in their mid-30s a 40s. And many had zero prior martial arts experience. One of the biggest misconceptions about jiu jitsu is that you’ll immediately be fighting for your life. At Ravensguard, adult beginners go through structured foundational training. The culture is focused, respectful, and controlled. It’s competitive in a healthy way. You leave class clear-headed and grounded.

Welcome to the Unkindness
A group of ravens is called an "unkindness." Traditionally, "unkindness" is thought of as a negative term. But at Ravensguard, we're reclaiming it. We're turning it on its head. We’re an unkindness of dedicated, skilled, and fiercely loyal Jiu-Jitsu practitioners.
The Importance of Lineage in BJJ
Lineage in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu refers to the unbroken line of instructors from the art's founder, the Gracie family, to a particular practitioner.
The Benefits of BJJ
Beyond its physical benefits, BJJ offers a multitude of advantages for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. We often say BJJ isn’t for everyone, but it is for anyone willing to put in the time and work.
